I had an alcoholic father too and he could make life miserable for my family, but he got clean and sober by the time I reached my tweens and never went back to the bottle. AA helped him a lot.

My dad would go on the wagon, but would eventually start drinking again
Before he passed away he had stopped drinking. He wouldn't go to the doctor and endured being sick and died at home
