Semi-related: Nuclear weapons have the potential to trigger fault lines and some explosions have even created new ones. Using this concept, Russians have even considered the potential military benefits of using nuclear weapons to trigger the Yellowstone super volcano. It probably wasn't seriously considered, as the caldera exploding at Yellowstone would most likely result in a planet wide catastrophe that would last years.
