I think she is still holds the title as one of the greatest gymnasts ever, specifically because she was the last to perform several moves that have since been banned as being "too dangerous" to perform.
It's interesting that prior to this perfect 10 performance, other gymnasts were performing this, and the other banned moves, for years, before they finally caught up to concluding that these moves need to be eliminated.

Right? The amount of balance (no pun) she had to have to pull these moves off is incredible. Spinning in air, flying through her legs, twisting 360 degrees to land right back and grab the bars. She must weigh about 89 pounds in these images! She was the tiniest little thing!
When I was in gymnastics, it was required that we did everything including the bars, balance beam, mat and even the vault. I will never forget belly beats because those terrified the hell out of me. I was in incredible awe of them, but still terrified. When it came to mat work, I always had to be spotted during flips because I just didn't have it in me.

The only thing I enjoyed in gym class was the trampoline. This was before they put any type of protective netting around the edges of the trampoline. We just bounced around on the sucker and if we fell off and conked our head, so be it! We'd be sent to the nurse's office.
