Kirk is correct. The French efforts were a decisive element - not the only decisive element, but one nonetheless.
The French support was critical not only directly in North America, but also because they engaged Britain in what amounted to a world-wide war that distracted the Brits and split their forces to different military theatres. -

Yes, the perception that Americans seem to have of the Frenchmen is that they are snobbish, condescending, smelly, hairy, effeminate cowards who sound like babies with a mouthful of marbles when they speak. Now don't shoot the messenger here. I don't think they are all that smelly.

The French government ran like rabbits when the Germans approached in WWII.
The Brits didn't, especially the Royal Family stayed with their people.
