Arsenal could still, in theory at least, win a treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League. Well, yknow. But all Hull have to play for is Premier League survival. And yet the team in 18th spot is currently in a better mental place than the one up in fourth. Arsenal have lost their last two Premier League matches, against Watford and Chelsea, their dreams of a 14th title pretty much up in smoke. Hull meanwhile looked down and out just a couple of weeks ago, but their last two games saw them draw at Manchester United and beat Liverpool, and suddenly an unlikely escape is on.
Arsenal should still win this theyre hot favourites with the bookies. But in-form Hull will fancy their chances, and theyre under no pressure this afternoon: if they get anything, itll be a bonus, and their upcoming run of fixtures against Burnley, Leicester, Swansea, Everton, West Ham and Middlesbrough may allow them to play without fear here. By comparison, should Arsenal fail to grab all three points today, expect a wee ripple or two of discord on the concourse afterwards. -

From the long ball in, Hull's Grosicki feeds it in from the edge of the box where Niasse goes flat out for a headed effort on goal which Cech pounds away. A good chance for the visitors which saw the Arsenal defence dangerously exposed. -

After 30 minutes it's gone pretty flat here. As Wenger watches on from the stands he must be sensing the odd atmosphere around the stadium as Arsenal fans seem unable to decide whether to cheer their boys on or moan resignedly every time a chance is scuppered or when Hull come forward.
Sanchez and Ozil have been wasteful, and those with Arsenal in their Saturday accas may have cause to fret at this point in the game. -

Gibbs' close range strike is cleared off the Hull line but Sanchez is there to stab home from two yards. There seemed to be a suspicion of hand ball on Sanchez' part, but Wenger won't give a damn as he celebrates from the stands. -

In injury time, Hull keeper came tearing out of the area which resulted in Hull defender Clucas handling on the line from Sanchez.
Ref Clattenburg dismissed Clucas and Sanchez converted the resultant penalty award. -

Unlucky Hull. Played okay and should have seen Gibbs sent off (might have got something from the game).

So Arsenal go third, joining Spurs on 50 points but with an inferior goal difference.
Hull will find themselves bottom should Sunderland and Palace get at least a point from their respective games later. -

It was the break that Arsène Wenger and Arsenal needed. Alexis Sánchezs opening goal was the result of a clear handball, but it helped to earn the win for his team and end the two-game losing streak that had led to the latest outbreak of angst in these parts, and the latest questions about whether Wenger ought to stay on as the manager beyond the summer.
The referee, Mark Clattenburg, felt so bad about his failure to spot the handball on 34 minutes that he said sorry to Hull Citys players.
When we came out for the second half, the referees apologised to us and said there was handball, Andy Robertson, the full-back, said. Hes obviously looked at it at half-time and seen he was in the wrong. Not many referees admit theyre wrong, so thats good, but it doesnt make it any better.
Wenger said, with a smile, that you face a good storm when you lose two games on the trot at Arsenal, and all he wanted here was the victory, no matter how it came. It was more about the mathematics than the brilliance today, he added. -

Re. the Sanchez handball, if a ball had ricocheted back off a defender's hand like that in the box, there's no way the ref. would have blown for a penalty. Doesn't logic/fairness then dictate that it's right that Sanchez wasn't penalised and the goal was awarded (even if the ref. had seen the handball?)

It wasn't deliberate, therefore it wasn't a foul, therefore it was a goal. End of story.
The amount of garbage people are talking about this is incredible. Yesterday the PGMOL said the goal should have been disallowed because it "doesn't sit right" for a player to score with his arm, even though no foul was committed. If that's a real policy - the referees invent their own rules based on what sits right with them - the PL should stop using these clowns.https://www.imdforums.com
