The main event usually seems to last a whopping 5-30 seconds. Unless the preliminary matches are good I can't see the point in shelling out so much money for something that doesn't last.

Same reason people bought Tyson fights.
Some enthusiasts are rooting for a particular person on the card. It could also be that a particular contender is notorious/famous for fast finishes. This draws people in just as much as having "your" favorite fighter beat the crap out of their opponent in an undeniable fashion that leaves no room for arguement or speculation. A fast finish tends to do this and is not an issue for most fans.
I was interested to see Rousey in he comeback. It ended very quickly and not in my favor. I was not upset. The only issue I had was with how late it was before the main card came on. The fights need to start earlier. That is my only gripe.
Long fights that end in a decision can be displeasing to many people as well. Especially when it appears that one or both of the opponents are "playing it safe". I did not like to watch boxing when Lennox Lewis was the Champ. He strategized and coasted in my opinion. But that is how he fought and was his strategy. To me a long drawn out fight needs to be all out war such as Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffen.
It is all about a fans tastes.

No idea, it hasn't made good television since they changed the format and started taking themselves seriously. Early UFC was a hoot, though.
The future is in the hands of a man who has none.
(As in no future, as opposed to no hands.)

My buddies and I make an event out of it. We get some beer, grill some food, split the cost of the PPV, and hang out while we watch the fights. If you've got 5 or 6 people, you're only spending $10 each on the PPV, less than the cost of a movie ticket.
That said, you gotta pick your spots and you always run the risk of short and/or bad fights. Although I'd rather watch a finish than 5 rounds of two overly cautious dudes circling each other, you do get a sense of what the top fights are gonna be if you know MMA. Even when Rousey was winning her fights would last 45 seconds.
I remember when Fedor fought Tim Silvialol Silvia lasted 12 seconds or something like that. It's just part of the sport. When that happens, hopefully the rest of the fights are solid.
          Bigly.

I'd rather watch an exciting knockout in 10 seconds than a 12 round Mayweather snoozefest.
