I'm pretty sure that no team has ever played in their stadium for the Super Bowl, but has any hosting city ever gotten to the Conference championship ? I wonder..

The 49ers won the Super Bowl at Stanford in January 1985.

Superbowl XIX, between the 49ers and the Dolphins, was played at Stanford Stadium, about 30 miles from the 49ers' home stadium, Candlestick Park. The 49ers won easily.
But no team has ever played in their conference championship game with the opportunity to win and play a Superbowl in their home stadium. The Los Angeles Rams lost in the NFC Championship in 1977 when the Superbowl was to be played at the Rose Bowl about 15 miles from their home stadium.
Of course, Houston could buck the trend this year, having made it to the playoffs, but they won't. You have better chances with Atlanta in 2019.

I'd like to think that the Vikings have a shot in 2018. Realistically though, they have some things to fix.

Explain to me why any NFL fan would want to be in Minneapolis,MN the last week of January and the first week of February.
Sure the game will be indoors and climate controlled, but the week(s) leading up to the game would totally suck.

Plus all the niners training and medical facilities were right there. Stanford is closer to SF and to Candlestick than Levi's Stadium is.

The Rams had some really good teams in the late 70's. Played in the NFC Championship five out of six years from 1974 to 1979. Lost all but one. A good run despite having average QB as best, James Harris and Vince Ferregamo.

If you require a home Super Bowl to be one that takes place at the home stadium of the team, then Miami has gotten the closest. They've never played a Super Bowl at home, but it's not for lack of opportunity. Miami's home stadium has hosted the Super Bowl 10 times. The Miami Dolphins have been in the playoffs 4 of those years, and three of those four years, they were two games away from appearing in the Super Bowl:
Super Bowl V (1970-71) in Miami: Dolphins lost first round. (2 games away)
Super Bowl XIII (1978-79) in Miami: Dolphins lost first round. (3 games away)
Super Bowl XXIX (1994-95) in Miami: Dolphins lost second round (2 games away)
Super Bowl XXXIII (1998-99) in Miami: Dolphins lost second round (2 games away)
There are only two other teams to enter the playoffs in a year that its stadium was hosting the Super Bowl: Tampa Bay in the 2000-01 season and Arizona in the 2014-15 season. They each lost in the wildcard round, 3 games away from the Super Bowl. Then of course there is Houston this year

I think so too as I can't recall it happening, even if without looking it up

I think Flowery is asking which team came the closest to playing the Super Bowl in their own stadium, only to fall short. In other words, who fell the shortest.
If so, then the 2014 Cardinals would have to rank pretty highly. Who knows? Maybe they would have made it if Carson Palmer hadn't gone down.

There's a lot of bright sunshine right now in Foxborough
