I think it's just an unfortunate result of a penalty being such a massive advantage in soccer. Don't think there's another sport where a game can be won by a single awarded penalty (except Hockey I guess)
The flopping out of the box though, yeah cowardly and should be dealt with more severely than it is.

I still think it's gutless but I understand taking a dive in the box; but it happens all over the field. I guess they're baiting the ref for a card? It just seems counterintuitive to competition and tactical play.
The future is in the hands of a man who has none.
(As in no future, as opposed to no hands.)

I enjoy seeing the embellishments that go with the flop. The blood curdling scream, the writhing in agony while looking for the ref and the card. And the miraculous recovery when he realized the ref seen right though it.
Can't the European leagues do some kind of retroactive punishments? "Hey, we looked at the tape, you flopped, here's a one match ban."
        Your future's all used up.

I think more than one referee for a huge area monitoring such issues might help.

That exact punishment was happening at one small stage, but I don't know what happened to it, seems to have disappeared again. I'd like to see harsher penalties than that. I think the authorities have always been resistant to making changes that would make the game different at the top compared to games played in a local park. But with the introduction of Goal Line Technology and some retroactive punishments for violent conduct the cat is already out of the bag so to speak.
One of the problems though, is the times when it is 100% obvious to everyone that a player has dived isn't as common as you might think. There was an incident last weekend when a Tottenham player blatantly dived, got a penalty, and almost everyone I would imagine would say it was a dive.
But most the time, there is some kind of contact, which is technically a foul (or the player will look to make contact over a trailing leg), but you'll get differences of opinion over whether it was a dive or not, maybe 80% of people will say it is a dive, 20% of others will say it isn't. I guess you'd need a panel of 8 or something to review these incidents and only take action when it is unanimous a player dived, then hand out a stiff retroactive punishment. I think it needs to be more than a one match ban to be effective though.

I think they count on the fact that the pitch is so wide open that the official is often seeing things from a distance and partially obscured.

I think you're roght but they're wrong, considering how often the referee is fooled.
But the issue isn't just with faking injuries, it just doesn't make a lot of sense in general to have one referee cover the entire field of play when it's that big.

Pretty funny video clip. Soccer can be so ridiculous at times with this flop culture!

To be fair, it is a talking point and it can be quite funny. I was watching the Spurs match on Holloway Road at the weekend, it's near Highbury so a lot of Arsenal fans about, it was funny seeing them shouting at the (illegal) screen when Dele Ali dived for the pen.
