3DS outsells PS2

Prolly worth saying though that the PS2 sold the lowest in Japan out of the other main regions by less than half, the PS2 still outsold the 3DS in totality by about 2.5 times, and the DS outsold the 3DS by nearly the same. Considering the 3DS was a lot better than the DS and yet still couldn't pull even half the sales, I seriously doubt the Switch is going to do very well comparably. It's sacrificing too much portability to serve as a direct 3DS successor, the portable gaming market is clearly disappearing as a whole (replaced largely by phones, especially in Asia) and console-wise it isn't much different than the Wii U, which we already know sold like complete sh!t.
Still predicting an epic Switch failure. -

It's worth saying that one country has lower sales compared to two continents? Sure.

Essentially you're saying that it should be common sense that things sell less in Japan because Japan has a smaller population than two continents.
Looks at NES, 3DS, Saturn, and Vita sales
Oops looks like you're not as smart an ass as you thought. For further context, the PS2 sold the worst in Japan vs the other regions yet the 3DS sold the best in Japan vs the other regions, which also skews the implications of your OP. There's a reason Japan gets its own region, and again, there's a reason I stated the facts I did to add proper context. -

Oh, wow, you're actually going forward with this nonsense.
The NES sold quite a bit more in North American than in Japan. The 3DS is clearly an outlier considering that the trend favours what I've already said. And two dead consoles, one of which has a pretty unreliable sales figures (Vita sales went from ~4-5 million in 2013 to about ten million in one day because Sony just lumped all of its sales data into one category).

The SNES also sold more in Japan than Europe, and we're talking about 120 million people vs over 700 mil btw. Japan also wins against "rest of the world" a lot of times, and we're talking some 5.8 or so billion people in that case. Clearly there's other factors to consider, but that was exactly my point in comparing Japan to the other regions. It's not as simple as your smart ass "LOL Japan is teh small other places are teh big!" remarks.
But anyway, for people thinking this is some epic feat for the 3DS, it's not, because it's still trailing PS2 total sales by nearly 100 million. Not that that's entirely important anyway. What's important is that it's also trailing DS sales by close to 100 mil.
Some people in this thread interpret the OP as a sign that the Switch, marketed at least to some degree as a handheld, should be highly successful, but when you look at the big picture you realize that the handheld market is actually significantly on the decline, even with a powerhouse system like the 3DS leading the charge.
I'm betting that Switch lifetime sales are considerably less than the 3DS, but more than the Wii U. Let's saaaaay.40 mil. -

What a stupid comparison! By Yoss no less, of course that the 3DS was bound to surpass the sales of the PS2 in Japan, but Yoss forgets that Sony stopped production of PS2 consoles like nearly 4 years ago while Nintendo hasn't stopped production of the 3DS.

The PS2 was on the market for about twelve years, while the 3DS has been on the market for less than six. The PS2 is not some random console. It's the best selling home console of all-time, and by quite a lot - as in, more than fifty million more than the second best selling. You're seriously going to argue that it's not newsworthy?

Not saying that is not newsworthy, but you how Japanese gamers kinda been preferring mobile games over console games or PC games and like I said is not like Sony PlayStation is still manufacturing PS2 consoles.
