BIG SPOILER TIME: Neir
is about homunculus clone people in the far flung post apocalypse, under attack from sentient salt-constructs made of the souls of the humans meant to inhabit their clones.
From what I've seen, it's not the most complicated videogame, and for many that was one of its big problems. -

The first Nier is a (visibly low budget) JRPG rather than an action game. Don't expect the fighting to be anything special, though it does have some bullet patterns, changing camera perspectives, and stuff like that to spice it up.

How long does it take to set up a Japanese account and does their store have English or just Kanji, or is at least easy to navigate regardless?

It is? Last I heard on Neogaf it was only on Japan and EU but maybe they added it to US PSN afterwards. I'll check when I get the chance.

My only gripe is the gray industrial look of it, which seems to be common for Platinum, and the reused saw boss fight, but it's still tripled my interest playing this. Also sci fi > epic fantasy, in my opinion.
I've played the demo three times now. All I have to do is beat it on Very Hard mode. That will take a while.
The industrial look is only partial. There are sections of the game where 2B & 9S visit abandoned cities filled with green, similar to
The Last Us
. Also, one section takes place in the desert. I don't know all the details, but we will be seeing mutiple areas of different variety.
Platinum has only done the industrial grey look with MGR and some of Anarchy Reigns. The rest of their games have a vibrant color palette. In the case of Mad World, black n' white.
