In 1947 Charles Schulz started a cartoon feature called L'il Folks for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. It was a flop, never achieving a permanent spot in the paper. In 1950 he compiled his strips and sold the series to the United Features Syndicate, which changed its name to Peanuts. Peanuts made its first appearance on October 2, 1950, in seven newspapers. It became the most popular and influential comic strip in history with 17,897 strips published in all, making it "arguably the longest story ever told by one human being".
