So, new phone. Android. Mostly happy with it, but I'm surprised at some of the brain-dead decisions. Here's a few things that are starting to bug me about the platform. All of these features were present on my old, dirt-cheap Lumia phone natively.
No double tap to wake as standard? Apparently LG is the only Android platform that has this? If you want it on your Android phone, you'll have to root your phone and void the warranty. That's just nuts.
Extremely poor SD card integration. On Lumia, you'll have several options concerning storage and which type of data goes where. Photos, apps, videos, documents, and music. Nothing like that on Android. It's just all or nothing, and if I switch to using the SD as the default storage, the phone needs to restart and afterwards runs like ass. Why can't I just have an option of which storage I want to use when, say, downloading an app? "
Hey, Hearthstone takes up an assload of space, do you want to store it on your SD card instead? Yes please!
" SD card storage seems like a complete afterthought on this platform.
No dark theme for the forced Google apps? That's just stupid. Huh, just found a Google app that has a dark theme. The Authenticator. Baby steps!
No glance screen. A feature I was quite happy with on my Lumia. Something everyone commented jealously on when they saw it for the first time. Extremely useful. So much so, that I'm actually shocked this feature wasn't adopted by every platform immediately.
No count indicator on apps? I don't even- come on, why the hell isn't it there as standard? Too useful?
Google Calendar notifications are broken. Great job, Google. Your otherwise lovely-looking calendar is completely useless if it can't make sounds and pop a notification when something in my calendar is happening.
Gmail has no useful slide gestures. Outlook has, like, ten options for each direction. Quite handy. Would love to have that here, Google. Get your ass in gear already.
Contact thumbnails are pixelated as hell, despite using high resolution pictures and the picture looking fine when the contact it opened.
Vent vent rant rant. Considering that Android absolutely dominates the market, I'm surprised how far behind they seemingly are in terms of usability. Most of these aren't even new issues, either. LG brought double tap to their phones at least three years ago, and became standard nearly a year ago on Windows Phones. Every other platform has had count indicators for as long as I can remember. Dark theme's been on Windows phones since, like, 8, and is available in practically every application I use on any other platform. Glance screen is almost a year old now. SD card integration has been beep on Android since my first Android phone. Gmail client has always been kind of poop. I'm not even sure how you can release a calendar that doesn't know how to notify the user, that one just boggles the mind. What's up, Google? Are you just twiddling your thumbs with each update? Your apps get updated on a near-daily basis, yet they never seem to get any better.
Oh, can't seem to find a good podcast app. I've tried Podcast Republic and Podcast Addict and they both suffer from the same issue where it'll just kind of crash after about forty-some minutes, losing all progress. Any suggestion would be appreciated. If anyone has solutions or suggestions to any of the other issues, I'd be glad to hear them.

I use Podcast Addict, and while it does crash periodically, it has never lost any of its progress before.

- My Xperia Z3 has double tab to wake, so presume it's a feature in the Z4, Z5, X & XZ too, never mind the other models.
- Go to Settings > Storage > Transfer Data to SD Card - yes you'll have to download to internal first, but you can batch move everything here.
- Glance screen, don't use it.
- Count indicator, eh, when you choose to transfer to SD (as above) the menu will count apps for you prior to transfer.
- Dark themes are nice, Xperia devices offer bright and dark OS themes.
- Don't use calendar.
- Slide down to refresh/sync - Swipe left or left to archive email - Swipe from edge of screen to open menu.
- My resolution for contact photos is fine, must be your OS.
- What device did you actually buy? SD card support is being driven by the wayside in recent years, only a handful of manufacturers still offer it, most seem to be phasing them out, which is very annoying.
- Podcast Addict has been crashing for me too, but I've gotten that problem with the offical Sony Podcast app too, probably best to download before listening, probably a cellular issue, lost packets, etc.
Apparently, my son was on something called 'Acid' and was shooting a bow and arrow into a crowd.

Huh, don't have that option. Weird. Hmm, according to people on the internet, Android no longer natively support apps running from the SD. Maybe there's an app to do it. - Count indicator, eh, when you choose to transfer to SD (as above) the menu will count apps for you prior to transfer.
Count indicator for mails and so on, not how many apps I have installed. - Slide down to refresh/sync - Swipe left or left to archive email - Swipe from edge of screen to open menu.
Sure, but just talking about slide gestures for mails. Archive and delete aren't useful to me. - My resolution for contact photos is fine, must be your OS.
Seems to be a random issue across various Android platforms apparently. - Podcast Addict has been crashing for me too, but I've gotten that problem with the offical Sony Podcast app too, probably best to download before listening, probably a cellular issue, lost packets, etc.
Never had the issue on my previous phone. I've been using OneCast instead as FiB suggested and so far that hasn't done it.
