The idea is this: what if the nominees for Best Picture each year weren't nominated? Which films should have taken their place in that scenario? Pick your alternate selections for Best Picture and, if you wish, mention anybody who you feel was overlooked in any other category. No need to confine yourself to the types of films which typically get nominated or to English-language cinema. If you missed the previous years, they can be found on the classic film board.
All films released in 1945 are eligible. The nominees were:
    The Lost Weekend

    • Billy Wilder
      Anchors Aweigh
    • George Sidney
      The Bells of St. Mary's
    • Leo McCarey
      Mildred Pierce
    • Michael Curtiz
      Spellbound
    • Alfred Hitchcock
I've watched all of these other than
      Anchors Aweigh
and, as much as I love Billy Wilder, I would rank both
      Mildred Pierce
      and
      Spellbound
      over
      The Lost Weekend
      and would ultimately give
      Spellbound
      the win.
      My alternate nominees:
      Brief Encounter
    • David Lean
      A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
    • Elia Kazan
      Detour
    • Edgar G. Ulmer
      Scarlet Street
    • Fritz Lang
      Leave Her to Heaven
    • John M. Stahl
      Rome, Open City
    • Roberto Rossellini
With these in the mix, I think
      Brief Encounter
      just barely edges out
      Spellbound
      .
      Draft Barron Trump

Two British movies that I like listed as 1945 on IMDB, seem like they are 19th academy awards movies.
      Vacation from Marriage
is listed as winner of the Best Writing academy award in the 19th.
I Know Where I am Going
was released in the U.S. in 1946. On the other hand,
      National Velvet
which is listed as a 1944 movie and that I mentioned for the 17th academy awards was nominated for 5 different Academy awards in the 18th Academy Awards
      My Nominees list
      Spellbound - Alfred Hitchcock
They Were Expendable - John Ford
Our Vines Have Tender Grapes - Roy Rowland
The Valley of Decision - Tay Garnett
      The Southerner - Jean Renoir
The Story of G.I. Joe - William A. Wellman
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn - Elia Kazan
      National Velvet - Clarence Brown
      Love Letters - William Dieterle
A lot of very good movies. None that really stick out. I think I will go with
      The Valley of Decision
      for Best Picture.

        Children of Paradise
        Rome, Open City
        Scarlet Street
        Detour
        Dead of Night
If it could have won then Children of Paradise should have won.
