They never really did matter that much to me. I prefer the Razzies.
Just that I think it might feel weird rooting or being interested in seeing this person or that movie win when it was something I watched on my smartphone, TV or a small screen instead of the large silver screen as it was back in the day for which movies were made and meant to be shown on.
If I was interested in the Oscars I just don't see how I could generate enough excitement for something I watched at home.
Actually going out to the theatre is a much different and more exciting experience.
    Things change.

Yes. It is still a celebration of excellence. I think it does matter to the people who win or get nominated,as well as many critics and film buffs. Winning an Oscar, or even getting nominated, can generate awareness or publicity for a film, leading to more people seeing it.

Netflix started killing them when their movies got nominated that were hardly seen by anyone in theatres.

Most people haven't even heard of half of the movies they nominate these days.

In a way they matter more now. Most of the attention nowadays goes to big blockbuster movies and everything else gets overshadowed. The Oscars give these other thoughtful and more interesting movies exposure when many people wouldn't have heard about them otherwise.

Only if the films and others nominated are truly worthy and not chosen because of "wokeness" and "reputation" to be seen as doing the right thing with phony virtue signalling projections.
Unfortunately, Hollywarped's transparency and political agendas have become so malignant, that they have become their own worst enemies. It is so obvious that it's about industry self-congratulatory pats on the back now and not so much about what the films can really give to the movie going public that have emboldened this industry.

                      No!
Did they ever?? So many awesome incredible actors and performances never won anything let along nominated and so many sucky wons have won.
It's obviously some kind of political ploy.

"It's obviously some kind of political ploy."
                        Yeah, it kinda is.
Studios will wine and dine the voters or heavily encourage them to vote for nominees of movies they put out.
The voters do not always fully watch the movies they vote on.
Sometimes they will do it because they just like that actor and hate that other one or for other biased reasons.
Like someone said they voted for a movie just because the time period it was in made her nostalgic for it.
Winning an Oscar is not as well earned as a sports team winning the championship game.
They need to make it more worthwhile and it feels like a party they throw on just for themselves.
Frankly I think the public should vote on them after watching the movie.

Thats why I enjoyed the Golden Globes with Ricky cause he ranked on them on all of this. THere was even a report that the Golden Globes were bought off. An actual report. It was terrible.
