To make him hate women so badly?
It's well known what effects an overbearing, controlling mother can have on a weak young boy, and how that translates into hatred and abuse towards other women. That certainly seems to apply in this case.
I feel like there's a good lifetime movie in there if we could just get to the heart of the story.
