At least five were charged with illegal possession of weapons, including at least two who had a previous domestic violence conviction. The pardons Trump issued on Day 1 were crystal clear: full, complete, and unconditional clemency only for federal offenses related to the events at or near the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Period.
That means the child sex crimes, rapes, DUIs (even the fatal ones), unrelated weapons charges, or any other state-level or non-Jan-6 federal stuff you listed? Not touched. Not pardoned. Still fully prosecutable. That's why several of these guys have been hit with new charges or convictions after release — on exactly those unrelated crimes. The pardon didn't give them a "get out of jail free" card for everything in their life.
We don't imprison (or refuse to pardon) American citizens for things they might do in the future. That's not justice, that's pre-crime Minority Report nonsense. You charge, try, and convict people for what they actually did. The Jan 6 pardons wiped the federal slate clean for that specific event — nothing more.
And yeah, the pendulum swings both ways. That's exactly why this happened. One side spent years treating Jan 6 like the end of civilization — maxing out sentences for "parading in the Capitol," charging people with felonies for walking through an open door, and calling it an "insurrection" while waving away billions in damage and deaths from 2020 riots. Overreach. Now the other side swings back hard with blanket clemency to correct what they see as political persecution. Also overreach. Both sides have done it, and it never ends well.
Trump couldn't just cherry-pick "the nice ones" and leave the ones with prior records or messy histories to rot. If the entire process was viewed as weaponized and unfair, a selective pardon would have been arbitrary as hell and looked like playing favorites. Blanket fix for a blanket problem.
The ones who reoffend on new stuff? Lock 'em up again — on those new charges. Simple as that. No one's above the law, but no one's below it either just because the media screams "violent criminal" every time a Trump pardon drops.
