First of all, people thought their cable had gone out, and they freaked out. The show played a joke on them. Secondly, life is like that, it doesn't come to a neat ending. Thirdly, it left the viewer open to interpret it.

Sopranos was weak… GOT was even weaker…wire was underwhelming…deadwood wasn't even a finale… umbrella academy was absolute horseshit…lost was a ****in joke…most sitcoms have really ****ty finales. Truthfully most shows end dreadfully

80s iconic shows had a few questionable endings
Miami vice had Crockett and tubbs tying up loose ends and ruminating on their futures, which allowed show producers options to spin off. But not a great ending
A-team ended abruptly without any closure at all final episode was just a regular.ratings had fallen so low that network killed it before season traditionally over
MASH ending obviously highlighted the absurdity of war but viewers still hated it
