Great point, many films concentrate on lead roles getting it together without this being particularly fundamental to the plot - eg. lead male and lead female find time in a film to have sex, at which time a trivial point or two about their personal histories come out

I've heard from people that claim to have been in prison that rape isn't really that common. It seems to be exaggerated in movies or TV shows about prison life.
I was more curious how they were able to get food often enough for them all to survive. I know some supplies were dropped but they seemed to only go to the evil group. I think they did hint cannibalism but wasn't really shown. For the other group trying to be more civil. I didn't see much hunting to suggest there was plenty of animals, or farms to show they had a growing agriculture. Plus where did all the stuff that kept washing up on the shore come from?
I wouldn't have complained if they had some scenes with rape but it wasn't needed.

As you pointed - it's mid 90s movie. Homosexuality was not a trend as it is now-a-days.
