When Tom finds the photograph of Molly, why doesn't Jack just play along? He's the one who was telling Molly how hard life is on the front. I would assume he'd want to let his brother go on believing he has a reason to live then break the news to him after the war or when he gets a chance to break it to him gently (assuming that's even possible). The way it's done in the movie seems absolutely cruel and, I believe, it's what leads to his distraction and death.

I imagine that Jack felt like he needed to be honest with his brother, and didn't realize it would have such an effect on Tom. Tom seemed like a rather stalwart guy.
Another thing to consider is that Tom and Jack were English upper class, i.e., gentlemen back in the early 1900s. It might have seemed like the honourable thing to Jack to tell the truth.
It is interesting that Douglas Fairbanks jr. gets in a somewhat similar situation in the movie
Captured!
(1933). He gets thrown in a German prison camp with his good friend Capt. Fred Allison (Leslie Howard), whose wife he has been romancing. Fairbanks can't bear withholding the truth and decides he has to escape from the prison camp.
