The Number One philosophical sci-fi film of all time is
      2001: A Space Odyssey!
As a matter of fact, it's the
greatest film of all time, period!
It forever changed the way films are made, and the way we view them. And people are STILL debating the meaning
      56 years later!

As I said to Bentley in his recent thread, listing five is impossible. We might complain about most movies these days, but we still have a wealth of great ones to watch, if we really look. And on any given day, any given mood, our absolute favorites will change.

                        Excellent list, all.
                        Gattaca
really left a mark on me.
                        I thoroughly enjoyed
                        Dark City
. It also was a bit of a dark horse, that one.
                        2001: A Space Odyssey
always brings to light things like the dangers of A.I. and eternity.
                        Minority Report
is a step in the direction of where we are currently headed. We are being prosecuted and punished for thought crimes, though not quite to this level.

The very purpose of science fiction is to explore philosophical ideas, free from the constraints of reality. It allows the writer to present an idea using a kind of "what if" scenario. Most science fiction is philosophical. I'd argue all is, but somebody will spend the day hounding me about that statement, digging up obscure movies I've not seen, questioning if they're philosophical, or they'll simply argue that they don't find the philosophy of the film all that intetesting so I'm wrong.

I disagree. A lot of sci-fi is just a celebration of tech with no deeper introspection
                                    Transformers is a good example

I suppose there's a potential argument here about the difference between sci-fi and fantasy, but I'm not in this thread to argue. I'd like to just enjoy another good movie discussion.
I would like to rephrase my statement. Sci-fi was always the best genre for philosophical story telling, until toy manufacturers started making movies.
Seriously though, can you offer other examples? I'd like my theory fully tested, because I'm still not convinced it's wrong. Are all the examples going to be kid's movies?
ETA: I've never watched a Transformers movie, so I'm conceding because of my own ignorance and trusting your perception of those movies. Are you sure they're not at all philosophical? To make a non-philosophical sci-fi movie seems like a tough assignment to me.
Additional ETA: Congrats on getting me to enter into the very discussion I said I was trying to avoid.
                                      Good skills.
