And granted, Robocop and Predator were never getting nominated in anything but technical categories. But the others I named as not being nominated in Best Picture were also at least feasible. It was an embarrassment of riches that year and the academy totally dropped the ball. What's "inconceivable" (to quote one of the best films that year) is that they were fully aware of most of these films. Connery and Douglas won, of course, The Princess Bride was nominated for Best Song, Full Metal Jacket for Adapted Screenplay, and Matewan for cinematography. They just chose to nominate lesser films.
Now, Wings of Desire, it's maybe to much to ask for a German film to be nominated for all of the awards I mentioned (save for maybe American acting legend Peter Falk in the supporting category), but for it to not even get a nod in Best Foreign Language Film is absolutely ludicrous!

The biggest issue is the lack of recognition for unconventional films including comedies. It's just mostly vanilla winners like Forrest Gump.

Ah, Chevy Chase hosted that year? All the more reason Candy should have been nominated and won! Chevy Chase is a notorious prick and couldn't even be bothered to take part in the new documentary on John Candy. 179-year-old Mel Brooks and an actor on the caliber of Tom Hanks managed to find the time, but not Chevy Chase!

So imagine him coping and seething when he heard Candy's name called… The clip would have been a classic!

Best and the Oscars are all subjective. I liked many of the nominated films that year.
Cher however, was a poor choice win for
Moonstruck
. This was a strong year for leading ladies. I like
Moonstruck
and I like Cher in it. It was however, the least of the nominated performances.
My 2 favourite support male performances for 1987 weren’t even nominated and they carried more weight and emotional impact than the nominated ones:
Alfred Molina for
Prick Up Your Ears
and Esai Morales for
La Bamba
One has to remember as well, connections, popularity and prestige also play a big part in Oscars. There are also only 5 slots, so something has to miss out.
