Exodus at xAI - Two more Co-founders left Company β Musk announced Restructuring
Zihang Dai and Guodong Zhang left the company.
Zhang was responsible for the company's coding agent and its video and image generation tool.
Following these departures, only two of the engineers who co-founded the company with Elon Musk remain.
Most of Elon Musk's co-founders left xAI.
The exodus of co-founders from Elon Musk's AI startup continues. Zihang Dai left xAI earlier this week, according to sources familiar with the matter. His xAI badge disappeared from his X profile. Meanwhile, Guodong Zhang announced on X that Thursday was his last day β just hours after BUSINESS INSIDER exclusively reported his departure.
This follows the exits of several xAI co-founders, including Toby Pohlen, Jimmy Ba, Tony Wu and Greg Yang,
all of whom left the company since January. With Dai and Zhang's departure, only 2 of the 11 people who co-founded the company with Musk in 2023 remain β Manuel Kroiss and Ross Nordeen.
xAI declined to comment
Zhang reported directly to Musk and led two of the company's flagships: Grok Code and Grok Imagine.
He was given a larger role at xAI earlier this year, shortly before Wu left the company.
On Wednesday, Musk stated at the Abundance Conference that
"Grok is currently behind schedule in terms of coding."β¦"The reason I was late to this discussion is that I was in a giant all-hands coding meeting, going over all the things that need to happen to essentially outperform our competitors in coding, which I believe we will"
.
Before joining xAI, Zhang worked at Google DeepMind and earned his PhD from the University of Toronto, according to his LinkedIn profile. Dai was a technical employee at the company. He also worked at Google and earned his PhD in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University before co-founding xAI.
Zhang and Dai declined to comment over the phone. Zhang wrote on X:
βItβs been a wild ride these past three years, but Iβm excited for the next chapter. Thanks for all the love and support yesterday.β
An xAI spokesperson didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
Musk: xAI βis being rebuilt from the ground upβ
xAI just hired Jason Ginsberg and Andrew Milich, who jointly led product development at the AI ββcoding company Cursor, as they announced Wednesday on X. And Musk, in a response to an X post about the new hires, made it clear that he believes xAI needed a restructuring.
βxAI wasnβt built properly the first time, so itβs being rebuilt from the ground up,β
he wrote.
βThe same thing happened at Tesla.β
The company laid off dozens of employees since January. Musk announced last month that he was restructuring xAI and parting ways with some employees. Some of the layoffs affected employees of the company's AI white-collar project Macrohard, as well as Grok Imagine, the AI ββimage and video generator.
βSince weβve reached a certain size, weβre organizing the company so it can operate more effectively at that scale. And in fact, in situations like this, some people are better suited to the early stages of a company and less suited to the later stages,β
Musk said during the all-hands event in February, which was published on X.
Zhang was one of a handful of xAI executives who delivered a speech at the general meeting. The restructuring came shortly after two of Elon Muskβs direct associates, Wu and Ba, left and xAI was acquired by Muskβs rocket company SpaceX. SpaceX reportedly prepares for an initial public offering (IPO) this year, which could value SpaceX at USD 1.5 trillion (about EUR 1.31 trillion).
Less than three weeks after the restructuring, Pohlen, who headed Macrohard, announced his departure.

Elon Musk's Voice Assistant Grok is insulting
AI as a weapon: The chatbot Grok delivers drastic insults on Elon Musk's Platform X.
Can legal action be taken against it? And if so, against whom?
Elon Musk during an appearance: I've got cheese on my head, I'm an entrepreneur.
As Grok might say: "You stink of cheese, s.h.i.t and crypto juice β go **** yourself, you Starlink a.s.s.hole."
