While watching the Kojak DVDs I quickly realized what scenes were shot in NY and the scenes shot on the backlot at Universal Studios just by looking at the police cars. Although the DVDs only cover the first season, I noticed that all NYC-filmed scenes where a patrol car is shown it is either a late 60's Ford model, or a '72 Plymouth marked as car 1097. When they shot in LA, an older Ford Galaxie and '66 Plymouth Belevedere are used. I suspect that both cars are actually repainted former LAPD cars. I also noticed that the sirens on those cars look fake (not enough detailing). Also, the sirens of the green/white/black NYPD cars is not accurate for that time period. The sirens on those NYPD patrol cars sounded like a fire truck.

Interesting information! Thanks, ddc300!
I remember the green&whites, but can't remember when we (NYC) changed to blue&whites. I "remember" the issuejust can't place the year(s) when it happened.
Anywaylooking at the season 1 DVDs, one can't help but be struck by how superbly the show holds up! FIRSTthe writingthe dialogue alone, and the narratives. Then the acting, and the "realism" the show invokes. It was the firstand everyone who came after it owes that show an enormous debt.
It's just that today's writing isn't as good.
