Speaking of the Korean war…
I read your review of MASH the other day and don't share in the same enthusiasm for it.
I just thought the faking suicide to score with a nurse and the football game were a bit much and didn't fit in.
There was a certain kind of raw and gritty feel to it, which is how I imagine it really felt like, which I didn't get from the TV series.
The earlier seasons did match more with the zany bits of the movie then it became more regular or tame.
They say the TV show was anti war and was based on our invasion of Nam at the time though I don't see it.
Is the same said about the movie?
I think to have really made it more anti war show more of the destruction and deaths of civilians that our soldiers did.
Overall I am not too keen on war movies, unless it's anti war, which is the catch 22 of Catch 22 that show war to be against war.

I'll like to see the show one day and do a thorough review of it. As for the movie, I think I'm looking at the characters' perspective that nobody wanted to be there in the first place but got drafted and performed their duty honorably and wouldn't mind if they got into trouble and were thus thrown out of the armed services. These doctors/surgeons/dentists are quite valuable, and they know it. That's where the comedy comes in: the gray area. I found the little situations extremely funny, and it got a lot of well-known characters. It's the witty writing that worked for me the most. I will check out the film again one day and see if my opinion will still hold up.

You have never watched the TV show MASH?
How can that be?
It is on all the time.
I swear, it is one of the sitcoms that always seems to be on everyday no matter where I go or move to in the country.
Like MeTV has four eps on to equal two hrs of it everyday.
Which is too much for me.
I have seen it plenty of times that for now I don't feel like watching it.
If you ever do I would suggest the first seasons with Trapper, Henry and even Radar, the only actor to go from the movie to the TV screen for the show.
The more it was on with character replacements the worse it got or just dragged on too much and was no longer as zany, silly and fun as the first few seasons were.
(They did have a MASH "Olympics," where there were enough Drs. and nurses to take time off to play in that. I guess that was their answer to the movies football game.)

I've seen the reruns, knowing the stories, from time to time whenever they are on TV but never have done the formal whole thing from start to end. Right now, I'm working on Arliss and will post the review when I'm done. I think next will be The Twilight Zone and Miami Vice before tackling on MASH.

First impression of your website: fairly slender review in terms of word-count. Are they all this succinct?
'Fixed Bayonets'
: may be a so-so film but I'd watch Richard Basehart in any role. Anytime, anywhere.
In the supporting cast I also spy Skip Homeier and Michael O'Shea. Two more names I trust.
Finally, the flick is a Sam Fuller movie. I don't care if he shot it in his backyard. Any work by Fuller is worth viewing simply to study his choices; his decision-making.

Thanks. Most reviews I did are appropriate in length. I don't like to write too much unless there's substance to address some points. Just keep sampling and see if you like it. As for Samuel Fuller, the best he did was The Steel Helmet. I like The Big Red One, too. He was better with war films because he experienced it. As for other genres, it's mostly hit or miss.

I will hop over to your site whenever you post a review link.
Sam Fuller's best? I'd regard that honor as probably going to his madcap western, '
Forty Guns'
. Scorcese is a big fan of it.
