I use a ridged bread knife to cut everything and I've never needed to sharpen it.
I've always felt it safer and it's not easy to cut yourself with a bread knife.

This sounds silly, but the only person I trust to sharpen my knives is a relative I see 3 times a year who always asks when visiting if they can sharpen my knives. I have a steel, but suck at it.

You're lucky to have someone in your life who can do that.
There are a few ways to sharpen them, but it does require skill. Nothing beats a very, very sharp knife.
