Nope, parents wouldn't have let me and I didn't want to.
I had, at various times, black rat snakes, hognose snakes, black racers, green snakes, and king snakes.
Got bitten a few times, but the bites are like tiny pricks and scratches… their teeth are about the diameter of a sewing needle. They didn't bite and hold on… they'd just strike and pull back.
I just washed bites well and put some antibiotic cream and a band-aid on. Healed in two to three days.

A bit hard to look after. For food, you need to give them live critters… the same ones they eat in the wild.
Hognose snakes were the easiest because they eat toads and they were plentiful where we lived.
Interesting fact; hognose snakes don't bite… can't even be provoked.

I got really fond of the little guy. In the real hot weather I'd spray his web gently and he'd come running out to enjoy the mist and have a drink. One morning he was there and a couple of hours later he'd disappeared. No dead body anywhere so I knew he'd gone off looking for a mate. Maybe his kids will turn up one day.

That is such a heartwarming story. I simply love it! And there are still people who think animals aren't really sentient beings. Tobey was smart enough to recognize the water being spritzed and he obviously felt safe enough to move towards you and be observed. That's wonderful. How long ago was this? It would be nice to think he found love and may bring his little ones back to visit. It's surprising how often that happens with wild animals that have had some level of human care.

This was a few months ago. He was on the inside of my back door so I watched him all the time. I even posted a thread about him.
