Evidently it has to do with the Pennsylvania agriculture department calling them mango peppers in the 1870s…Ohio adopted the practice…for whatever reason. It is evidently a thing in multi states…but only in regional pockets…not widespread like in Ohio southern counties. Maybe still a thing In Pa…I didn't research further

Well, they're called mangos also
Sometimes bell peppers will be called "mango peppers" if there seems to be a need for clarification.
But this is mostly just a thing among older people. I rarely hear anyone under 60 call them that.
