What Kenda really thinks of Carl Marino

I am so sorry to hear that Marino abused you, but I’m not surprised. I reached out to one of the women on the PI show and learned a lot about what he did to them. According to the actress, Carl was hired in 08 to act as a cheater in a bar to test decoy applicants. I would share the links she provided but I don’t have the required 25 posts. She said Carl excelled at playing a narcissistic cheater because he really was one. When they landed the show deal, Carl begged for a part but Lifetime said no. Carl went nuts and threatened to destroy the show and Lifetime actually served him with a C&D order. Carl then sabotaged cases for the show by secretly calling the subject of uc stings. They wouldn’t fire him bc he was assigned to the uc sting on the police. Which he also sabotaged the same way as all the others. Now I personally found this tale a little far-fetched until I saw the video of Carl working uc to expose police in 09 FOR THE SAME PI FIRM. Basically what she said was that Carl was jealous of the PI and set him up bc he was refused a part in the show. Well then she said Carl went on Dr. Phil, got caught lying, threw a tantrum back stage, and now won’t talk about his “heroics” bc he fears going to jail.
A lot of that stuff is in the book, but the parts about the corrupt police wasn’t. The actress said she has the child support order from NY state that proves he was a deadbeat dad.
I hope this helps. -

Link doesn't work but I just saw an episode of 48 hrs where they talk about what I'm pretty sure you are talking about. Carl was the one who turned in his boss for all the bad stuff he was doing so why would Joe not think much of him?
Like I said, didn't read it since the link didn't work. -

It took me quite a while to type this up, an excerpt from "The Setup: A True Story of Dirty Cops, Soccer Moms, and Reality TV" by Pete Crooks. There are other passages I don't relate here, covering Carl Marino's various personalities, such as a military history that never occurred.
The part directly concerning Joe Kenda and Carl Marino is as follows:
Marino plays a young version of Kenda in the re-creation sequences. Example: Kenda says, in voice-over narration: "I wanted to check the police report again, so I went back to my office and pulled the file." Then Marino is shown looking at a manila folder.
After setting up an interview through Investigation Discovery, I asked Kenda what he thought of Marino. Kenda said, "I've talked to him on the phone one time, for about ten minutes. You know what he told me? In the brief call we had, he told me he was a detective back in New York. I thought, 'You're pretty young to be a retired detective,' so I made a couple of calls. Turns out, he was a detention officer in Upstate New York."
Kenda had seen Marino on 48 Hours, and told me he thought Marino was "lying his ass off" on that show. "What was he even doing [working for Butler], where someone would give him drugs to sell?"
Kenda, who spent forty years interrogating liars, had an interesting take on Marino. "He's Walter Mitty," Kenda said. "He wants you to think he's this other guy, not the guy he really is. And if you say, 'No, you're not that guy, you're this guy,' he gets upset."
Sometime after my interview with Kenda, he had a chance to meet Marino in Knoxville, Tennessee, during production of Homicide Hunter's third season. Kenda posed for a few pictures with Marino, and "the two Kendas" filmed a behind-the-scenes video together. Kenda's experience meeting Marino in person was similar to that of retired FBI agent Chuck Latting.
"I met Walter Mitty," Kenda wrote. "He was quiet, nervous, and intimidated."
Kenda noticed that Marino carred a prop to the set to feel important. "He has purchased a director's chair, hardwood and canvas, looks pricey," Kenda wrote. "He has had a canvas support made and embossed with his name in white 4" letters on one side, and the other side reads LIEUTENANT JOE KENDA: HOMICIDE HUNTER in blue. Why don't I have such a chair?" -

That's pretty brutal but I'm sure it's true. Kenda isn't the type of man to say crazy stuff like that if it's not true. Just going by what I've seen of him.

I don't find it brutal at all. My father spent several years in Vietnam, and he and his veteran buddies have an extreme dislike/hatred for those who lie about being in the military.
I admire Kenda a great deal. -

My dad was in 'Nam for two tours as well so I understand. I've actually met a lot of men who want to impress me with faux "special forces" experience. Real special forces never talk about it and I'm not a naive woman so I don't fall for their bs. If you read the rest of my response I said "Kenda would never say anything like that about someone if it wasn't true". I'm a huge Kenda fan and I wish more cops/detectives were like him. Sadly most of them are the "anti-Kenda".

Also in the book, Pete Crooks relates instances where Carl Marino claimed to be the cousin of Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Mario, a decorated war vet, AND a first responder at 9/11!
EDIT: Dan MARINO -

Do you mean Dan Marino?
I thought that Kenda had chosen Carl Marino because he looked the way I thought Kenda wished he had looked when he was that age. Marino is a really good looking man!

Lol, that’s how I found this discussion when I googled question of why Joe doesn’t look anything remotely close to Carl. This is where I got directed. Jojo must have a complex, huh. I actually really liked Carl’s portrayal of Joe. Made him look real good, tough, and fair.
Whether the actor is a Trump clone I.e. a compulsive liar is another matter entirely -

This is a link to a video from the 48 Hours episode where Marino is talking about working undercover, negotiating drug deals and all while he was doing acting jobs and trying to keep the two straight. I'm calling BS on him just like Kenda did. There is NO WAY he could work an undercover for the government and do acting gigs at the same time. He is completely full of it!!

Totally agree! Marino is a wanna be everything he's not. But in his defense, he's obviously relied on his looks and been treated well because of them. So maybe he doesn't have self assurance that he's liked for anything but…

As soon as I finished reading your link, I went to the IMDb page on Marino and read his bio there - which he appears to have written himself. Good God, this guy is really full of himself! Part of the bio reads:
Carl excelled at both academics and sports in high school and, after graduation, attended the United States Military Academy at West Point. Following West Point, Carl became a Deputy Sheriff in New York and served for almost 17 years on the force.
He also has a Facebook page and claims to on a "Kenda Cruise" with
Carribean Independence of the Seas,
and claims that Joe is there, too. Can anyone confirm this? If Marino is so smart, why hasn't he figured out that his IMDb bio has been debunked? One thing that has always bugged me is that we all know that Kenda is a south paw, but I have seen Marino writing and pulling a gun with his right hand several times. I love Kenda, though, and from now on I'll be listening more than watching. -

Not to be rude but I think you're really nit picking about the right hand vs left hand issue. Less than 10% of the population is left handed, and really shouldn't be a deciding attribute on whether an actor lands a part. (unless it is significant to the role, which in this case, it isn't.)
The other aspects of Marino embellishing half or more of his background, writing his own bio on IMDB and now possibly lying about his personal relationship with Kenda (traveling on a cruise ship? Really? That's the "lie" you want to purport about the relationship of the famous Detective you portray on television? That's just dumb.), are disturbing. I mean the guy is just 5 years shy of 50, not 15. He's obviously been making up stories about who he is and what he's done, all his life.
Too bad because the truth might actually be interesting.

The right vs. Left hand is a little BIG thing. It matters. Both in character development and casting and in many many other instances
If the film project is being spearheaded by a REAL passionate filmmaker who wants to do things right and they are depicting a REAL character they always want to 1. respect the person who they are not just drawing information from, but basing their whole project around 2. if you love and respect the art of storytelling, then every single detail counts. Because there always could be that diehard or anyone in general who happens to notice it - a character they have read up on orgrew up watching as kid- and it pulls them out of the story and the character and it makes it seem inauthentic. There are many people n the world and who are hired to be sure there are no little things that could make it seem like the character is not the character they said they were celebrating.
Of course that doesn't mean "ok so only left handed actors can audition" or whatever- it means whoever they think is the actor who is perfect for the role and has a "BUT" he doesnt carry a particular original characteristic that the REAL person has. SO they weigh the options if its something that can be helped they will help it. They would teach this perfect for the role actor how to go through the day fluently as a lefty if he was a righty. but there are certain things that people realistically cant change if its a physical thing like height ( but they will try all options first like oh he will look taller if we aim the camera this way or lets put her in heels and see if it makes a diff, etc.) So if you are a good storyteller you will get all details down to a T but in this instance they didnt go the extra milemaybe its just a ID production , maybe they didnt even think about it or thought they could fly one by the audience.
But it happens in all big time movies Kate Winslet didnt know any ballet so that one scen in Titanic where she and jack are dancing and she shows them all her toe move just for that scene alone they hired someone to train her to be able to do that and in this case this wasnt depicting a REAL person but they wanted the character to be a certain way so if the actors they hire dont posess it and they cant be trained-NEXT!. they train actors how to actually play a instrument if the role calls for the real character to play oneor be fluent in a language. they want it authentic.
The left vs right hand is A BIG THING.. in a murder case a wife said her husband committed suicide but they broke the case wide open and charged her with the murder because the victim was left handed and the way the shot went in and what hand the gun was in made it so there was no way he could have done it. She staged it terribly and forgot her lover was a lefty.over that "tiny" little matter-they were able to prove the whole case differently. that one lil detail but someone in jail the rest of her life and that one little detail could have SAVED her from being caughtif she planted the gun in the correct hand. -

We are on two different pages. Homicide Hunter is not a show pressed with concern about character and artistic development. You made an excellent point but I honestly don't think it applies here to the choice to use Carl Marino to depict Kenda; perhaps it should have.
As you pointed out, it is an absolute for large productions, particularly where the cost and elaborate planning and filming is concerned. If it weren't, it would weaken the entire story; sort of like peeling away the strength of the overall story and depiction.
Here, it is noticeable (we know the real Kenda is a south paw) and therefore it is noticeable that Marino is not. (ie-the viewer may or may not notice this.) But, I honestly don't think it takes away from the overall series.

if anything throws me off this show, it's the casting. none of these girls/dudes look like the actual person. i'm watching season 3 and a white dude's playing a mexican cop. i know looks don't add to their acting ability, and that this is a tv show, but it just gets on my nerves when they don't even try casting someone similar to their real life counterpart
Schrodinger's Cat walks into a bar, and doesn't.
