I know some people have a problem with the last part going psycho slasher
Definitely a major issue. Out comes
a guy looking like Freddy Krueger warping space and sound while blabbing about how God spoke to him.. but without any substance.
This movie combines the 2003 Hulk movie's editing with the basic concept of 1998's Armageddon and then a pinch of 1997's Event Horizon or 1998's Sphere.
The visuals are beautiful and the soundtrack perfect.
I enjoy visually stunning movies, especially ones set in space. But all there is to look at is the sun. Orange fiery balls aren't that stunning to me. The soundtrack had its moments. I read some people hyping it up, and there were a few standout tracks, but overall fairly forgettable.
Then there is the story of a crew sacrificing their lives to save a world.
Been done in many other popcorn action sci-fi movies. Nothing new.
I wanted to like the movie. I just came out of it baffled by the final act, and bored by the characters.

I didn't enjoy it either but it was recommended to me by someone who loved it. Mind you the same person have me Ex Machina and I disliked that too!
                  Different strokes eh?

Sounds like you need a new source for movie recommendations.

It's a bummer when a movie that starts out with such excellent promise, turns into something that disappoints. I felt the same about Ad Astra.

I already knew the father/son relationship was the main theme, but I was so let down when the scientific reason for all the cosmic surges was never properly explained.
I thought that the father's explanation and reasoning for the Universe threatening pulses was lame and unbelievable.
The rest of the movie was fine. Brad was brilliant.

                                          It was explained.
It was Tommy Lee Dickhead's malfunctioning ship, and he was such a colossal jerk that he didn't let Earth know he was still operating but needed help, because they would have shut him down.
