I agree it may not have been superclear, but it was in the brief Brad got with the military types in the first third of the film. They suspected that it was Dad's malfunctioning reactor causing the surges.
All of that made the dad more of a jerk, and Brad more of a hero, in the context of the end of the movie.
What a polarizing film! I thought it was decent, though the Mars section really dragged. Some people really disliked it.

I liked it. It was a morality tale too, I guess, but I still felt let down by the movie after his father turned up. I guess I really WAS expecting more science and less dysfunctional family.

I think a lot of people were, like Dad, disappointed in the final results of Dad's mission and search. But that was part of the film's message: if all we gots is us, we better be good to each other.

It's a bummer when a movie that starts out with such excellent promise, turns into something that disappoints.
Seems to be director Danny Boyle's shtick.

I agree though I feel like you are being generous.
1/10 from me.
I didn't go below zero because it is nicely filmed and acted.
Though maybe I should because I could not stand the shaky and blurred cam for the mad captain.

There's enough good in the first couple of acts to warrant a slightly higher score from me, but the final act really does bring it down significantly.
