No way is
3D
better than
2
. At least
2
had a mostly believable shark, and it had great performances from Scheider and Garry. AND it had Amity.
3D
, on the other hand, had a completely fantasy/cartoon shark at its center of "terror" (heh, heh). A cardboard cutout, a "submarine covered with skin" as one poster described it, along with insultingly bad effects, photography, and editing, is a slap in the face even to the most supportive, enthusiastic, well-wishing viewer. That's why
3D
is a complete failure from the get-go - an inexcusable, irredeemable, total mess. -

A little too unkind.
Jaws 3-D certainly acquiesced to being the sub-par fare that one expects when they entertain the viewing of a Hollywood "threequel". However, you mustn't judge J3D's shortcomings on the simplicity of watching the film on Home Video. When you consider the mammoth screens that screened the film in 3-D there were greater experiences to be had. Jaws 3-D definitely succeeds in this realm. Too, it boasted an interesting concept with adequate performances and characterization. It had many great merits too, such as the dynamic score by Alan Parker, and the photography (especially underwater shots). It failed, in the reserve of keeping the style in that of a "monster" movie - by which the filmmakers created an unrealistically and uncharacteristic antagonist. Bigger shark was scarier in 3-D but is not plausible as the sharks in the first two pictures. That being said - and as I did state earlier - Jaws 3-D is inferior to both earlier Jaws films. But this is the Jaws 2 board.
And Jaws 2 works both as a sequel and as it's own picture. The fact is there are so many aspects and angles to go through and examine when you are making a sequel to a film like Jaws. Jaws 2 works the best to please the widest possible audience. Insatiable niche film critics who quite frankly know not of what they speak really have to room to speak up on how bad or not good J2 really is. -

In a world where Jaws and Jaws 2 don't exist, I'd agree with you. But that is not the case - Jaws 3D is a steaming pile of dog $hit. Poor acting, even more dubious special effects than its predecessors, and boring deaths/kills. Plus the shark literally swam in reverse? That's physically impossible for a Great White and most sharks.
