Actually my friend and I sat down to watch it last night on Blue Ray with about 100 other people (cities can now project free, high quality films), and by the first 15 minutes he was saying the same thing as you.
I thought it was tasteless and full of cheap gagsbut they made me laugh. And, I am the hardest-to-win audience there is. Spock may have laughed more in Star Trek than I do. But Brooks scored a few good ones on me.
But yeah, there are people who don't like it or get it. -

cities cannot, actually, just project or show movies for 'free'. by law they still have to pay public display licenses. they may be able to get special deals, but if they think they can just show what they want, they are most likely breaking the law.

it is not funny
I re-watched it last night and found even
unfunnier
than I did 28 years ago. It's as watchable as ever but not the hilarious comedy it wants to be. I
do
love - and have always loved - the "Oh sh*t, there goes the planet" line at the end though. -

The only award it was nominated for, and that it actually won, was the Stinkers Bad Movie Award as the worst movie that year.
