This was the essence of Superman

Yesthey really don't care about the character in any real shape or form. Not only is Henry cavills character hollow but his overall personality is non-existent
To be fair to Cavill, if it were completely up to him, I doubt he would play Superman the way it's depicted in
Man of Steel
, and
Batman vs Superman.
It's a directional choice by Snyder. Cavill can only do so much with the script he's given and the constraints placed upon him by the director. In interviews with Cavill, he is a pretty laid back, funny guy. He'd probably want to incorporate more of that personality in his portrayal. -

He behaves more like Superman in interviews than he does in the movies. He has a child-like enthusiasm about being Superman, then he puts on the costumeand scowls.
That is such a shame. I've felt Cavil has a good look for Superman. Too bad he's stuck in mediocre movies.

I don't think Henry Cavill's the problem in the newer films, every now and then he does show the warmth that Superman should have, he's just stuck with the wrong director, as seen in BVS which totally threw him under the bus in favor of quite possibly the most selfish & self-centered live action Batman ever put on film.

This film is so Golden Age Superman I love it. And I'm so disappointed at how Superman is portrayed in film nowadays, he should be a boy scout and a beacon of optimism and heroism.

OP is exactly right. I watched this film again recently and was amazed at how vastly superior this film is compared to any of the modern super hero films. I've stopped watching the genre as all new films end the same way: hero is conflicted, villain and hero fight; city blocks are destroyed in process; super hero wins; credits roll over carnage.

Exactly. Reeve captured the true nature of Superman. This is why Reeve's Superman will always always be memorable. Henry Cavill's emo punk Superman has no heart, no soul, no juice, no ambition, nothing. This is the reason why Reeve's Superman is still on top.

I love the utterly charming sense of decent and polite friendly wholesomeness that Christopher Reeve brings to the part of Superman. He's like the total epitome of sweet heartland American values and good manners.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.
