It’s not for everyone and I don’t mean to sound like a film snob.
I can get into it even though it’s a bleak and sad movie for the most part.
I don’t get it how everyone dies like that at the same time at the end.
The ending with the young couple surviving the storm with their baby is all about hope and a better world from those dark and depressing times.
That’s one reason I like it.

I will try watching it again and see if it's any better this time. That was in 2009. Maybe my opinion will change.

If or when you do watch and see if you think he was mocking religion with things like burning at the stake someone being blamed for evil, self flagellation, confession, and killing in the name of God for the crusades while God is doing nothing to save those from the plague.
Or is it just an observation of the times?
If the ending with the young couple is about having faith for hope it’s done without religion.

I also just want to say that I think it’s a movie with a bunch of symbolism and messages.
Again, I don’t mean to seem like a snob just that a chess game with death is a creative idea for a movie, I think.
