My great aunt used to tell us all kinds of scary sh't, one of the main ones being: demons stink. They are so foul and putrid they can never hide it.
The "fart" smell was the demon manifesting itself in the girls' room. The cold was another sign of it being there.

Well, a movie called "Demons" from 1985 did tell us how they're the instruments of evil, it just didn't tell us those instruments fart.
