Why are people surprised this was given a 2nd and 3rd season?

The ending was changed and left entirely open to the possibility of the adventures continuing beyond the scope of the book. I even predicted this would happen, and am glad it's coming true.
I just hope they manage to come up with some solid storylines having no more source material to draw from. They've already got the groundwork for something great, this could potentially become the next Game of Thrones with skilled & ambitious writers.

This show was a huge hit.
As always some whiners who complained that it didn't live up to the book…
