This movie is set in the 1950's during the cold war. The Soviet Union, America's arch-enemy, represented communist oppression, NOT equality.

Because, like Luke says at the end, these fascist Congressmen didn't give a sh!t about the First Amendment. Not one little bit. Then, just like now, anyone who disagrees with what they think is UNAMERICAN.
I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Back during the era in which it was set being a Commie meant you were trying to destroy the US from within. Research the Hollywood 19 sometime and you'll see.
Your replies will be graded and possibly used as material in future projects.

The OP, obviously young, just needs a bit of a history lesson. Start by looking up HUAC (House Un-American Activities Commission) in Wkipedia or Senator Joe McCarthy. After WW2, communists were the enemy. It was believed that they would try to take over the world and bend it to their twisted ideal. Russia and China had already fallen prey and France was fighting it in Indochina. The communists had nuclear bombs and it was believed they would use them. Families built bomb shelters in their back yards and school children drilled on what to do in the event of a nuclear attack.
This made many people very paranoid. Authorities were convinced there were communist spies, agitators and sympathizers hiding behinf every plant - bent on the overthrow of the freedom-loving western nations. Sen McCarthy lad the HUAC witch hunt trying to root out commie sympathizers. Hollywood was a big target. Many members of the entertainment industry sold out their friends in order to save themselves. Lives and reputations were destroyed.
As for what's wrong with communism? There isn't enough space here to deal with that. The OP will have to start reading some books.

Why is being a Communist such a bad thing? Ask that question of the Cuban exiles in the Miami area and you will get an earful of it. Quoting from Wikipedia, "About 500,000 Cubans, most of them business people and professionals, arrived in Miami during a 15 year period after the Cuban Revolution."
The United States had been battling Communism since the "Polar Bear Expedition" of 1919.
It seems a little ironic now that Hollywood liberals would portray Communism somewhat sympathetically.
