Everyone acts like Scarlett is the biggest a$$hole on the planet and therefore, she's not likable enough. BUT if this 4 hour melodrama was just about Melanie with Scarlett as the antagonist, it would get sooo boring so fast and you know it. Scarlett is the greatest character ever put on film because she is a compelling and real person, illustrated more beautifully than any other character in film history. She is so compelling and interesting in her ways, evil, selfish or not, she can hold the audiences' attention for 4 hours straight.

Scarlett is fascinating in the movie mainly because of the brilliant performance of Vivien Leigh in the role.
In the book, she is FAR from likable.
In fact, she could be termed as an "anti-heroine".
It's a pity that Vivien actually got no help from director Victor Fleming.
She had to interpret the character of Scarlett on her own, along with suggestions from George Cukor.
IMHO, Cukor deserved the Oscar more than Fleming.

Scarlett isn't very different in the film. Still selfish and conniving.

          So… Victor flamed her?

              (but certainly NOT 'most admirable').
She doesn't have to be. Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver isn't exactly admirable given some of the things he does. Neither is Vito Corleone, despite his strengths as a father.

I agree. Scarlett is the greatest character on film. Her character is very complicated. She could be selfish. She could be bratty. She was also strong. She was a hard worker. She did whatever it took so that her family wouldn't loose their plantation. She acted like a real person. I agree. The movie would have gotten boring if she was a good and perfect person that never did anything wrong. Scarlett being a complicated person made her character more interesting.

She finally comes to terms with reality, abandonning her dream of Ashley, when the carpet is removed from under her feet. So, you side with her because she made the right choice but too late. She was also a fighter whereas Melanie was a natural. So, in a way Melanie was too good to be real.

Vivien Leigh s role is the most ovverated of all time. She was awful as scarlett. She was mental in her life and it can be seen. Whats more in The streetcar named desire she played EXACTLY the same role, in the same way, Scarlet 2.0. but it was even more embarrasing because she was much older.
