The Day of the Jackal (1973). At the time, it was considered the most in-depth examination of an assassin ever filmed. It created endless cliches that are replicated today by most hitman movies. It's based on a Frederick Forsyth novel, so you know it's written by a man who knows what he's talking about.

A rare film where the villain is unsympathetically the main character, and has no scruples whatsoever.

The book is about the detective who foils the assination plot. I'd had to refresh my memory of the movie before challenging that point, because it would be extremely rare indeed. I did thoroughly enjoy the movie though, even though it was different to the book in whose journey it chooses to follow.

In the movie, the detective is kind of a background character. It follows the Jackal from one situation to the next. There's suspense because you never know what the unscrupulous SOB is gonna do next, or how he ultimately plans to pull off the assassination. Great stuff.

I normally would be critical of a "non-story", but it actually worked in DotJ. At least, I enjoyed it, which is what counts.
