Blocking old usernames?

Something to think about.
Tell me if I am wrong, but I assume that as things stand, someone could come along and take on as a new username a name that someone else previously was assigned on the original imdb message board.
If there were some way to confirm that the new user is in fact the same as the original owner of that username, there'd be no problems.
But since there is no way to confirm that, a new user could take an existing username and start making posts in a pre-existing thread. There's a potential for a lot of confusion, since any readers will assume that all posts entered under a given username are made by the same person, when in fact they probably will not be–posts made on the original imdb message board being made by the original user and posts made on imdbarchive made by the new user, even though both are using the same user name. -

How about for those of us who kept the same username as we had on IMDb, assign all of our old IMDb-posts to our current account?
It's fun to go through my posting-history once in a while and find stuff that I posted years ago and have completely forgotten about.
Thanks to IMDb's dumping of the message boards, I can no longer do that.
…unless Nimda works his magic and brings them all back of course! -

You're right–There's probably no reliable way (unless you figure out a way to get IMDb to let you have access to their user-account-info, and then you could match up E-mail addresses, etc.)
I'd say that whenever someone starts up an account, ask if they want to merge all existing IMDb-posts of that same username into their new account.
This idea could cause some problems (like Radix has suggested), but I think that there would be a lot more people like me who would LOVE to see all of their old posts back in their posting history than those who would fear being impostered (What's a better word for that? Dopplegangered?)
Hey, when you're competing against the other sites for traffic, you've gotta do everything you can to beat the competition–Right? If you could pull this off, I bet it'd bring a lot of people back (because we know that there's NO WAY that the other sites would even consider doing this–No one takes risks like Nimda!)

You say so much, but you say so little. Tell me in a PM if you want to be discrete, but if you don't say anything beyond this… I'm going to assume you're bluffing about having a "hip" new idea.
