Waking up at 03:00 a.m.
This Phenomenon affects Millions!
Do you wake up between three and four in the morning and often can't fall back asleep immediately?
This phenomenon, known in sleep research as the
"wolf's hour"
, is widespread.
Why does this happen, and what can you do about it?
Wolfsstunde = Wolf's Hour
β
What is the Wolf's Hour?
The term
"Wolf's Hour"
originates from old folklore and refers to the time between three and four o'clock in the morning when, supposedly, only wolves roamed. In modern sleep studies, it describes the phenomenon that many people wake up during this time window, even if they were initially in a deep sleep.
The interesting thing is that it's not a random disturbance, but rather an interplay of various biological factors β and those moments when the body internally shifts gears.
Why do we wake up particularly between 03:00 and 04:00 a.m.?
The proportion of deep sleep phases decreases in the 2nd half of the night, we spend more time in light sleep.
We're more susceptible to being awakened, for example, by noises, thoughts or physical stimuli.
And sleep pressure decreases. The longer we sleep, the more the body already received the necessary rest. This pressure begins to diminish, making it easier to wake up around 03:00 a.m..
Hormonal Fluctuations
Another mechanism is the balance between sleep and wake hormones. The sleep hormone melatonin is often still active during this hour, but a gradual increase in cortisol begins at the same time, preparing the body for waking. Additionally, serotonin levels are usually low, making the balance more delicate. This hormonal dynamic can lead to being jolted awake.
Internal Clock & Circadian Rhythms
The so-called internal clock (circadian rhythm) also plays a role. Around 03:00 - 04:00 a.m., the transition to wakefulness can already begin. The body adjusts to the start of the day. Stress, irregular sleep patterns or days off can disrupt this rhythm and make waking up more likely.
Influences of external Factors

Noise, temperature, light, a full bladder or physical restlessness can all act as triggers during this more sensitive sleep phase. When sleep is already more fragile, it becomes harder to stay in bed.

I skipped the usual tips for falling (back) asleep more easily, because it never was a problem for me.
The most beautiful time, everything is so peacefulβ¦at home.
My buddies also learnt quickly that it's a bad idea to rampage at night.
