Why?
Considering all the things I expected here, that's not bad.
He got pissed off that I didn’t stop to pick him up, and cussed at me as I drove by. To be honest, I almost never stop to pick up hitchhikers, period.

That's understandable. I once got spit on by one of them, it's the first time I did the same as you did, except to his face and he was my neighbor. Next thing I know, he moved out. I felt bad when I saw him and his son walking down the street with suitcases in tow, but you don't spit on people who ask you politely to tone the noise down. I shouldn't have had to ask in the first place if they'd acted like considerate human and not beasts in a barn!

But as a side note, there's something to be said about having few enough possessions, that moving out of a place is a simple and quick affair
