In the game, birds like the Great Tit have a special ability that only gets activated when another player takes a specific kind of action, thus making birds like this weakened in value when you are only playing with one other player.
So the original game doesn't really play like it is meant to with only two players.
But the recent Asia expansion offers a new version of the game called Duet which I think is meant to be for two players, and it is a stand alone game, so that might work as an option.
