BUTLER COUNTY, Ohio (WXIX) - A former Ursuline Academy teacher who pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing child pornography charges has been sentenced.
Butler County Common Pleas Court Judge Michael Oster Jr. sentenced Colin Higgins to five years community control and 150 days in the Butler County Jail.
Higgins is also required to register as a Tier 1 sex offender and must complete all recommended treatments.
If any of the sanctions are violated, Higgins could spend anywhere between six months to two years in jail.
On April 15, West Chester Township police received a tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children through the Ohio Internet Crimes Against Children that a user on Discord was sending child pornography.
Discord is a communication platform where users can connect with public or private communities by sending videos, voice texts or chat texts.
According to a police report, investigators were able to track the user ID to a phone number and an address in West Chester Township.
Higgins was the person associated with the phone number and address, the report said.
Internet Crimes Against Children noted in their tip that Higgins may be a teacher and was previously employed by the Mt. Healthy Police Department.
The investigative officer confirmed that Higgins was a language arts teacher at Ursuline Academy in Blue Ash and formerly worked at the Mt. Healthy Police Department, the police report says.
Higgins’ Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy file shows he worked at the police department between November 2018 and July 2020, the report says.
Although it is unknown why Higgins and the police department parted ways, the report says, categorized the reason for separation as “other - mandatory explanation required.”
FOX19 NOW reached out to Ursuline Academy for a statement, in which they said he had not been on campus since they learned about the criminal investigation, and was fired immediately.
School officials also made sure to notify the school community when the investigation concluded and charges were filed.
“The safety and well-being of our community members is our school’s highest priority, and we have robust child protection policies and protocols in place. We have no reason to believe that anything related to these charges involved Ursuline students, happened on Ursuline’s campus, or otherwise involved the Ursuline community,” the school wrote.
Higgins is currently behind bars in the Butler County Jail.

Well that's very unfortunate. He should have gotten at least 15 years. Definitely not a good decision.
A lot of bad decisions happen. Like giving early parole to a terrorist who tried to blow up a building.
The only poster who had his account banned 4 times without ever breaking any rules each of those times.
