Almost 400 Fans engage in Mass Brawl in Dortmund
A train carrying Schalke fans makes an emergency stop in Dortmund.
Shortly thereafter, problem fans clash with violent Dortmund and Cologne supporters.
Police are investigating whether there was a plot to commit violence.

On Saturday evening, a massive clash between violent soccer fans broke out in Dortmund. According to initial police findings, nearly 400 supporters of Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund and 1. FC Köln clashed in a wooded area near the railway tracks.
The incident began with Schalke fans returning from their second-division match in Magdeburg (final score 0-2 [

]). According to police, the emergency brake was pulled twice on the train route through Dortmund. The second time, a larger group got off the train and ran into a nearby wooded area. A violent confrontation broke out between supporters of Dortmund and Cologne, who maintain friendly relations. Schalke's fan base, in turn, is sympathetic to that of Borussia Mönchengladbach, Cologne's arch-rival.
Police encountered around 300 Schalke fans, about 90 Dortmund supporters, and 5 fans of Cologne. A police spokesperson stated that many of those involved had visible injuries, such as reddened hands and faces. The officers also seized gloves, boxing bandages and ski masks. Investigations are now underway to determine whether there was any prior planning for the violence.
Police initiated proceedings for grievous bodily harm, breach of the peace and dangerous interference with railway traffic. Because some people were on the tracks, a helicopter was deployed. The Schalke group was escorted back to the train by emergency services and later continued their return journey.
A few hours after the incident, another occurred in Gelsenkirchen. Unknown individuals stormed a private party at a clubhouse and attacked guests, including fans of Rot-Weiss Essen. The attackers damaged furniture and shouted insults. According to witnesses, these individuals were also members of the organized Schalke fan scene. Whether there is a connection to the altercation in Dortmund is part of the ongoing investigation.
