It's why I said per se. The land offers resources and security. If you really think about why you want the land, it's either resources or security.

Yes, but for what purpose? What is land good for?
It either gives you resources (ore, fuel, crops, pasture etc), robs your opponent of that benefit, or is used to provide security, either as a buffer zone/strategic position that helps you against your enemy, or a place you can occupy and defend to preserve your own people.
Why does Israel exist? It's an area Jews control so they aren't beholden to the whims of a host nation that might just start deciding to massacre them one day, be it Holocaust or pogrom. It exists to provide security for Jews.
The crusades were fought to neutralize the emerging Islamic threat. Taking their lands meant they would struggle to build and feed an army. Waiting at home for them to come, amassing resources as they encroached on Christendom, was not an option. The Mongols taught us about that one.
I'd be interested to learn of any war fought for land, for the sake of possessing more of it.
