I don't think "why" questions are that useful since we don't have their information and can't think like them. We just know when things don't look right, so we know the stories they are telling us are off.
For me, there should have been blood on his hand and later, when there was blood smeared on the side of his face, it looked like fake blood.
And yeah, all that sketchy stuff with the shooter makes it seem like that Crooks kid was the distraction in the magic trick.
We will usually be able to figure out later who benefited and that is how we can get closer to the truth. They put quite a bit of effort into covering things up. The crime is usually the easy part.
