Elvis is trash. Made millions on poor black people's songs. He should've shared some of those riches.
Big Momma Thornton, who was the original artist, was interviewed once and asked how she felt about him getting millions and her getting only a 100 bucks. She said at least she's still alive to spend that 100. But seriously, she deserved more.
There's more soul in her version.

It has very little to do with race. Chuck Berry and Little Richard had hits back then and both are black. The problem with Mama Thornton's version is it's a blues song. Elvis's is an upbeat rock song. That's why his was more popular. It's much catchier.
Only someone who knows nothing about music would say Elvis sucks. None of the music you listen to would exist without Elvis.
