I been looking for it for years and it's driving me mad. Can you help?
It's played on some sort of percussion instrument, possibly a xylophone or a glockenspiel. It's like lo-fi elevator/"on hold" type ****.

I'm glad that you've found it. I hate having something stuck in my head and I can't quite find it. I've got one just now but I'm nowhere near as good as you trying to articulate it into music.
