Even amongst people who dislike the concept of the monarchy had great respect and admiration of QEII as a person. She maintained her oath and maintained her neutrality. She was a force to be reckoned with, yet never put a foot out of line. She garnered admiration from people, including world leaders, all over the world.
Charles has never been that popular to begin with. It's going to be impossible to fill his mother's shoes. Hopefully the niche he carves out for himself will be sufficient and help modernize the monarchy.

I think that the future trajectory of the monarchy rests more on Will and Kate, provided Charles doesn't bungle it up before then.
As you pointed out to the haters, the royals do not rule; they are governed by Parliament who has the power to dissolve the monarchy.
